IT plays a big role in medical imaging and radiology : Dr. Arjun Kalyanpur
Shahid Akhter, editor, ETHealthworld spoke to Dr. Arjun Kalyanpur, Chief Radiologist & Founder of Teleradiology Solutions and Telerad Tech, Bangalore to know more about trends in Radiology and how IT is enhancing this domain.
Trends in Radiology
There are some very interesting trends happening in radiology today. These are mostly related to the trends in healthcare, in general. So, if we look at the prevalence of the non-communicable diseases in particular; what we call the big three that is Cancer, Heart disease and stroke – are continuing to increase both in India and across the world. These are all conditions that require imaging or scanning at some point in time, usually at multiple points in time. So, a patient with a malignancy or cancer will require imaging test to make the diagnosis and then subsequent imaging test to follow up. Similarly, with heart disease and stroke, the utilization of radiology across the world is increasing by leaps and bounds. All the trends and numbers have shown a dramatic increase in the number of scans that are being done across the world. In parallel though we have not kept up in terms of the number of radiologists that are required to interpret and analyze these scans that are being generated. In India, for example, we have 15,000 radiologists for a population of 1.3 billion, which is just about one radiologist for one lakh population that is a very small number. So, the radiologist shortage is another trend which we see is continuing to get worse because we are not able to train the radiologist fast enough to meet the demand. The mismatch between the amount of scanning that is happening which is necessary for the population and the number of radiologists that are available to interpret these scans to report these scans is the single most important trend that needs to be addressed going forward.
How Artificial Intelligence Can Help In Early Stage Breast Cancer Detection
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is breaking the boundaries of traditional software development into complex neural networks, data analytics, and computer vision algorithms to achieve human cognition of data. AI is all set to bring an exemplary shift across various industry verticals and is powered by the ever-evolving availability of data apart from the swift advancement of data mining and inference analytics.
In medical imaging, there is immense opportunity to improve patient care using AI. Not only will AI boost the efficiency of radiologists, it will also identify exams with critical findings and help radiologists to prioritize the cases that need immediate attention. It will offer ways to bridge gaps in accessibility, availability, point in time care, improved detection, and diagnosis.
Today, the healthcare industry is facing a global shortage of radiologists wherein radiologist is to patient ratio in USA 1:10,000; India 1:100,000; Bangladesh 1:10,00,000 and even worse situation in the African region. Governments across countries are under huge cost pressure to provide efficient and affordable healthcare.
Artificial Intelligence is a major opportunity and an ideal tool to improve patient care :Prashant Akhawat
Shahid Akhter, editor, ETHealthworld spoke to Prashant Akhawat, COO, Telerad Tech, Bangalore to know more about impact of artificial intelligence in teleradiology. Edited excerpts:
Artificial Intelligence changing the face of Healthcare
Artificial intelligence (AI) is going to transform the entire industry and different industry verticals. In healthcare it is going to impact in the form of data analytics or medical robotics, it could be in the medical imaging market, genomics or pristine medicines. If we see the artificial intelligence market, globally is going to grow around 200 billion USD overall and in healthcare segment itself we have seen around 1.4 billion USD in 2017 and it is going to grow 28 billion USD which is 2000% growth by 2025.

Telemedicine link to Tibetan settlements.
Radiology in India is booming. Radiographic technology has seen rapid development in the past two decades. The imaging that began with one modality, X-ray, has evolved into more complex ultrasound, Doppler, CT, MRI, etc., to PET-CT and PET-MRI. Everyday, new advancements in these modalities are reported.

Network-major Cisco Systems has won a multi-year engagement with the Central Tibetan Administration to provide telemedicine services to 22 Tibetan settlements situated in remote parts of India. The services will also be available to non-Tibetan communities around the settlements.
Tele health scenario in India.
A B Sivasankar, Vice President-Sales & Marketing, Telerad Tech gives an insight on the telehealth scenario in India and measures to improve the situation. The poor ratio of radiologists to the country’s population is accelerating the necessity for telereporting and helping radiologists report more studies per day, enlarging the scope of healthcare. Teleradiology as a concept is slowly gaining acceptance by the same people who initially perceived it as a threat to their practice. We find a majority of present day Indian radiologists telereporting radiology studies in methods that are not compliant with international standards and practices.
